@V1ruk I guess cynics are content to not bother with the burdens of enthusiasm. I might be a joker but I'm not the best of cynics.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YPijSWJmsE&fea ...
I never said what the punishment should be. I don't expect him to spend 25 years in jail. Some sort of correctional measure must the applied, that's for sure.

“"She argued that altered images were undermining young women’s ability to control their own destinies. “These photos can lead people to believe in realities that, very often, do not exist,” she said."Under this logic we should ban fictional stories, video games, most movies and Role-playing games. Try this, perfection doesn't exist but the quest for perfection (even imagined perfection) can enrich our lives in many ways. If you can't handle that enjoy your cheeseburger.

The lowest number in 20 years. Somebody call Al Gore....
That would be cheap, but when you're hungry and not dirt poor, then any amount is cheap.!

Or a customer could easily buy a laptop, swap it for a brick themselves, then return it and try to get a refund or a new laptop.?
This is *****. Most earbuds direct sound against my ear rather than into the canal. I have to crank up the sound just to compensate for crappy bud design. Even the expensive ones won't stay in my ear.My iPod has a password protected volume limiter built in for use with stupid kids, that's all that's needed. |

I've stopped watching (UK) TV - mainly because of the advertising, although I find our news programmes pretty abrasive and offensive to the senses too. In both cases the formats demand attention and are designed to become routine viewing - you end up seeing so much of it that you stop consciously analysing it, which is the worst state to be in when there are people who are actively trying to manipulate you.

I'm genuinely surprised that the article is showing the amount of TV watching to be so much higher in the US than other countries. I wonder why it is.

PlatnumPlatypus' comment was apparently deleted, but I thought it was a good one, so I copy-pasted."And then there are the math geniuses who, as anyone can’t help noticing, are disproportionately Asian. Citing the work of an educational researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, Gladwell attributes this phenomenon not to some innate mathematical ability that Asians possess but to the fact that children in Asian countries are willing to work longer and harder than their Western counterparts. That willingness, Gladwell continues, is due to a cultural legacy of hard work that stems from the cultivation of rice. Turning to a historian who studies ancient Chinese peasant proverbs, Gladwell marvels at what Chinese rice farmers used to tell one another: “No one who can rise before dawn 360 days a year fails to make his family rich.” Contrast that legacy with the one derived from Western agriculture—which holds that some fields be left fallow rather than be cultivated 360 days a year and which, by extension, led to the creation of an education system that allowed students to be left fallow for periods, like summer vacation. For American students from wealthy homes, summer vacation isn’t a problem; but, citing the research of a Johns Hopkins sociologist, Gladwell shows that it’s a profound handicap for students from poor homes, who actually outlearn their rich counterparts during the school year but then fall behind them when school lets out. “For its poorest students, America doesn’t have a school problem,” Gladwell concludes. “It has a summer-vacation problem.” So how to close the gap between rich and poor students? Get rid of summer vacation in inner-city schools. "-Boing Boing's rview of Malcom Gladwell's, "Outliers," http://www.boingboing.net/2008/11/12/malcolm-gladw ... |
